:. Stand Your Ground When Someone Tries to Rob You

It's a gloomy Thursday night and I'm on my way to crash at my friend's apartment in San Francisco.  I arrive to the deserted BART station, a public transit system in Nor Cal, around 10 pm and idly wait for the train to arrive.  As I sit down reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo I notice a group of guys approaching me out the corner of my eye.

"Hey man do you have a dollar bill for my 4 quarters?".  I don't know if it was the shitty weather or the gangster attire these guys were wearing but something didn't seem right. Usually when someone asks for change, they want to convert their bills into coins.  I've never heard of anyone wantin ga dollar for four quarters.

Something's fishy.
I casually respond "sorry I only carry credit" when I actually had 2 bills stashed in my wallet and watched as they walked away from me.  The train finally arrives and me being the idiot walk into an empty compartment in the back of the train while the mystery group enters the compartment next to me.

Now the train is in route, I look up and the guy who asked me for change slides open the door, enters the compartment, and sits a few seats directly in front of me. At this point, I finally realize what's going on because the mystery man's friends are blocking the door from the other side.  I mean who would randomly just leave his friends to come into a train compartment where I was the only person occupying it.

In my backpack, I had a recently purchased aluminum Macbook and my love for my gadgets suddenly kicked in action because I was ready to fight to my death to protect my dear baby. Let's just say the next 5 minutes in the train compartment looked like this between me and the guy.

The guy eventually got up and left without a word.  This really surprised me because he was much bigger and had his friends looking out for him.  I learned that day it is important to stand your ground and not look weak when you encounter a situation where someone is trying to take advantage of you,.  Most of these losers do not want to deal with someone who might potentially fight back.

TLDR: I'm just glad I didn't get robbed and I was ready to go down fighting like a man rather than cowering in the corner

  1. I hope you aren't Rock Lee, he's got creepy eyes. Glad that didn't escalate anymore...

  2. Good for you! I don't think enough people stand up for anything anymore.

  3. Wow, great story. That's great that the guy didn't decide to try anyways. I used to carry a pocket knife with me in DC when I was traveling. I'm not a small guy, but I am aware that there are bigger people then me.

  4. @Astronomy Pirate
    I can relate to that

  5. Wow, good work not letting those bastards get to you. And I'm glad they weren't psycho's and you came out of that unscathed.

  6. Damn, sounds like a bloody intense situation. Good for you that nothing further happened. Also that's a good book :p

  8. I was mugged once, at college. I was holding a little Styrofoam tray of food, picking at it casually, looking down, and then I was shoved into a wall, two guys came down on top of me and started hitting me in the sides and head. They took my wallet, got my cash and ran off before I knew what was going on.

  9. Oh man, Im glad they didnt get your macbook dude, that would of sucked.

  10. Your love of gadgets? Sounds like straight up balls to me. :)

  16. Some guy tried to mug me with a board once. He hit me over the head from behind and then I think I broke some of his ribs before he stumbled off into the night.

  25. great read, seriously.
and you are right you have to be ready to fight, as long as they dont carry a weapon it is the best way, and it feels good

    ReplyDelete
  26. Nice job, man. Getting eyed on the train is so annoying. I always keep my gadgets to myself when on public transport.

    ReplyDelete
  27. good for you man, I got threatened with weapons so I couldn't do anything...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm not that brave. I wish I were. If something like this would happen to me, I just don't know what would I do.. probably ignore them till they encounter me...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good for you! If you do get in a fight, assuming they aren't armed, take it to the ground. Most people don't know how to fight that way, so if you do, it gives you an immensive upper hand. (Plus, due to gravity, it's bound to go there anyhow. Better you do it in a controlled manner.)

  30. you should have called your friend who lives in russian hill, he goes by the name sasuke!

  31. although its good to stand up for yourself sometimes, i always try to avoid confrontation. after working security for a few years, you find out that the people who steal will do anything to get away.

  34. lol good for you. but would it be worth dieing over? could've gone the other way

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm not sure what I would have done. I probably would have given them whatever they wanted...

    ReplyDelete
  36. so lucky, I'm glad nothing happened with you

    ReplyDelete
  37. I cant go out at night without robbin

    ReplyDelete
  38. Can't remember, does BART have cameras, probably be a hassle to get the tapes.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Glad nothing occurred. The streets can be dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm sure the fact that you were alert and paying attention went a long way. Nice to hear it all worked out!

    ReplyDelete
  41. That was inspiring. I'm glad I live in a small town where that sort of stuff doesn't tend to happen, 'cause I'm not sure I'd have been as strong or savvy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Holy eff.
I usually plan to kick a dude in the balls and bail.
Or scream about having my period.

  45. Sounds pretty sketchy. I got robbed at gun point in long beach a while ago and I didn't try to fight back. I let them take my wallet, cell phone, and mac book. It was very shitty.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think I would have crapped my pants....literally. Wait - I'm a girl! I'm allowed, right? Hell....that's scary. Glad nothing happened.

Thanks for visiting my blog and following. Returned. And in answer to your question...it usually takes me roughly 2 hours to make my cards, give or take. :)

  47. This is so true. I wouldn't care if a baby tried to rob me, I'd smack him silly.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think you bring up a really good point, only prey are attacked by predators...

    ReplyDelete
  49. that was scary. I would have given anything

    ReplyDelete
  50. well done, man. Maybe if you didn't carry that mac, you could have given them a couple of bucks just to avoid fighting.
Loled with the pictures you chose for the eyes

    ReplyDelete
  51. haha, everything was great till i saw the rock lee pick, i couldnt help but laugh

    ReplyDelete
  52. I started reading hoping for some fight, or something, but you just disappointed me...

JK, it's important, but if you think that they are ready to kill you, just give them what they want, and leave

    ReplyDelete
  53. Of course man. The key for not to have problems is never, but never, show any fear.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You're lucky you didn't get fucking stabbed man:/

    Unrelated Randomness

    ReplyDelete
  55. Never experienced that, I don't have any protection on me in case of a mugging. I just rely on the place that I live that people around here don't really do that sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm proud of you :) I would've done the same thing. Most robbers target weak people who don't fight back exactly for that reason.

    ReplyDelete
  57. BART needs to be underground everywhere. Get it out of the roads!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wow, that's really lucky, but what if he had a knife or a gun?

    ReplyDelete
  59. haha yeah I always try to go to the car in the front, especially because I probably look like an easy target, being a girl and all.
Then again I'm broke as shit and don't have much worth stealing xD

    ReplyDelete
  60. To be honest, I wouldn't know what to do in that situation, my mind would actually be dumbfounded.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't blame you. That computer is amazing. I will stab a fucker to save my laptop

    ReplyDelete
  62. Definitely. Gotta stand your ground in situations like this. Personally, I don't go out without my steel toed boots and leather gloves. You never know when you're going to get into a scuffle. Nice blog!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Someone tries to rob me, they will get a face full of Springfield XD. 2nd Amendment baby!

    ReplyDelete
  64. If there's the slightest chance they'll get hurt at all then they wont do anything. Glad you didn't get robbed :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. your a good writer, i thought this was a legit story.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Rock Lee ... master of the drunken fist

    ReplyDelete
  67. Out of principal I'd put up a fight...although I'd probably try and talk my way out of it first...cool story bro

    ReplyDelete
  68. Great story! I think if more people would just pop a cap in a few filthy robbers then they wouldn't have the balls to go out and reek some havoc! I know plenty of relatives who are real gangsters and thugs...THEY ARE ALL REALLY COWARDS AT HEART! That's why they have weapons. They are more scared of your reaction or what their "victim" will do. That's why they yell, and bitch, and show off their weapon.

  69. I'd fight any punk that tried to rob me!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I guess I'd try get away by talking, but if attacker is aggressive you need to defend

    ReplyDelete
  71. Good for you. The BART stations get a lot of bad press these days.

I once kicked the living shit out of a guy for stealing my Xbox. You would've thought the guy murdered my family, but no he only stole my xbox.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wow, harsh situation. Risky though! Followed!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Man, that's a scary situation to be in. Glad things didn't get out of control.

    ReplyDelete
  74. good for you! do you think you couldve gotten a sponsorship had you bludgeoned all the potential attackers with the macbook?

  77. Great story! I will remember it, if someone tries to rob me

    ReplyDelete
  78. He left because he knew the jig was up. You were wise!

  86. One night I was walking at a dark street with 3 other friends. One gank with 10 big guys approached us and asked for our cellphones. My friends gave them but I declined and they hitted me. Sad story, I couldn't stand up for my self because I am not the "fighting" guy..
